Finn at 5 months

Finnegan is 5 months old already! What a sweet and happy boy he is. This past month he had his first airplane ride and got his first tooth!

He’s been grabbing at toys much more, but chewing on his fist is preferable. We put him in the jumperoo for the first time and after a few tries he really the got the hang of bouncing and now he goes to town. We also sit him in the bumbo occasionally, though his legs are almost too big to fit in it already. He’s wearing size 3 diapers and 9 month size clothes.

We transitioned him out of the miracle blanket, into Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit for a few weeks and then recently into the Zipadee-zip at night. We put him down awake and he falls asleep on his own.

His favorites things right now are watching us eat, watching big sister do anything, chew on his fist and “talk” while doing so, and of course, anything to do with Mommy. I could hold him and have giggle exchanges all day! Love my little guy!

Finnegan’s Nursery

My favorite room to decorate is a baby’s nursery. When I was planning Harper’s nursery, I knew I wanted gender neutral (partly because I thought I’d reuse most of it for baby #2 and partly because I didn’t want an explosion of pink and purple.) Well, I didn’t end up reusing as much of it as I thought I would. A lot of it was just too worn out. But we reused all of the big stuff. So Finn gets big sister’s crib, dresser, glider, side table and wall shelf. And a few other small things like the lamp, crib skirt and mobile.

Last time, I only had a color scheme in mind, but this time I had more of a general “feel” of the room in my head. I like the style of Wes Anderson movies and I wanted foxes, so I was envisioning Fantastic Mr. Fox. I also like geometric patterns and the aztec/tribal prints you see a lot now.

So it’s Aztec meets Wes Anderson meets Woodland.

Finnegan's Nursery

As with Harper’s nursery, I relied a lot on Etsy. I found this crib rail cover on Etsy and used it as the inspiration for the colors – navy, gold, mint green, orange, teal.

The triangle wall decals are from Etsy too. My husband and I painstakingly applied each triangle and it took a total seven hours (or over the course of four Harper-naps.) I actually meant to hang them further apart, but I miscalculated and once we started, we had to commit. I still can’t believe I got him to go along with that crazy idea, but it looks pretty cool as a focal wall.

His room has a cathedral ceiling with a large window. I had my mom make this bunting to hang across the window just like she did for Harper, but on a larger scale. I picked out the fabrics on spoonflower.com and had them shipped to her with the measurements and voila!

Finnegan's Nursery

I found these Wes Anderson movie poster prints on Etsy and have two hanging on either side of the window. The shop didn’t have Fantastic Mr. Fox, but I grabbed 4 other movies that we love.

The wall shelf above his dresser has a painted canvas done by big sister (I put on masking tape in the shape of an F and let her paint all over it, then peeled off the tape), a birth announcement print gifted by Aunt Lisa, and a wood section decorated by me. The framed print is from a local Austin craft fair.

This moon print is also from the local craft fair:

As is this wood sign:

I love “Where the Wild Things Are” but couldn’t find a print on Etsy that I liked that actually had the correct quote (a lot of them say “I’ll eat you up, I love you so” but that’s not how it’s written in the book.) So I whipped this up in Photoshop myself.

Finn at 4 months

Finn is now 4 months old and has slept through the night every night this past month! It was my last month of maternity leave so I was torn between letting him sleep in my arms for every nap so I could soak up every second and getting him comfortable sleeping unswaddled in a crib so that he’ll be ready for daycare. Oh, the working mom’s dilemma! He’s now napping pretty well in just a sleep sack, but his naps are usually only 20-30 minutes long. He still sleeps in the miracle blanket at night, but we may try Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit soon.

He’s proven to be a very happy, smiley baby and loves to smile at anyone who looks at him. He’s quite ticklish as well, so we love to get giggles out of him. He continues to open his hands more and more and hold on to toys. He likes toys that crinkle (like empty snack bags, just like big sister did.) He’s a very social baby – he’s happiest when someone is looking at him (particularly when he’s in his carseat, which is hard to do when I’m driving.) And he loves to talk talk talk. He also loves to watch big sister do anything and has been eyeing the cats a lot more lately.

This past month, he met Aunt Lisa when she came to visit and enjoyed his first 4th of July with Drew’s family.

read books! (the sequel)

One of my favorite pictures of Harper as a baby is with this read hat on that I got at a local craft fair. Naturally, I needed to get pictures of Finn with it on too! Both our kids have literary names, so it was fitting to pose Finn with his namesake book, Finnegans Wake. (In hindsight, I should have posed Harper with To Kill a Mockingbird, but at the time I just grabbed the first book I could reach (Alice in Wonderland.)

Finn at 3 months

Finn started out this month by sleeping through the night a few nights in a row, but it hasn’t yet become consistent. He slept through the night a few more times throughout the month and then the last two nights have been his longest stretches yet. So I’m hoping for this to be a trend!

He’s napping quite well in his crib now – it’s probably a lot quieter in his room than in the swing in the living room. Although he still loves to nap in our arms too. He always has an evening nap in Daddy’s arms when Drew comes home from work. He’s wearing mostly 6 month clothes now. He’s lost some of his newborn hair – we’ll see if it comes back in blonder like Harper’s did.

He also got to meet Grandpa Bill and Grandma Julie this month! He had his first outdoor dining experience when we took him out to lunch. He was quiet and happy to suck on his fists the whole time – his new favorite activity. Now that his hands are opening up more, he’s more interested in toys (usually pulling them to his mouth) and likes to grab the back of his hair and pull (just like Harper did.) We introduced him to his activity mat this month. He also loves when we read to him and sing to him.

He smiles so easily – usually just by looking at him. He loves to watch and smile at Harper and she’s loving the attention from him. If he cries she’ll say “I’m right here Finn” or “I got you Finn.” It’s cute to watch her play with him to get him to smile at her. He had his first big belly laugh the other day while watching Harper jump on her bed. He giggles when you tickle his belly, and always gets hiccups after giggling.

One more month until I return to work. I’m trying not to think about it yet. I will soak up every minute until then.

Finn at 2 months

Finn is now 2 months old! He did very well at his doctor’s visit this morning. Took his shots like a champ and even smiled on the way out. He’s 13 lbs and 23 inches long. Two whole pounds more than Harper was at this age! He’s a happy and growing boy!

He smiles very easily and already charms people he meets. He enjoys tummy time for minutes at a time and is getting good at lifting his chest to look around. This past month he had his first bottle and we broke out the bouncy seat. He likes to smile and coo at his toys while sitting in it – comes in handy at dinnertime! We wrap him in the miracle blanket at night since we had great success using it with Harper. He wasn’t a fan at first, but he’s sleeping longer and longer in it (although he’ll kick his leg out of it.) He still wakes up once in the middle of the night (usually around 2am) to eat and then sleeps until 6 or 7am.

Here are some pictures from the last month:

Finn at 1 month

Finn is now one month old! What a joy he has been! It’s still weird to say that I have a son and that I have two children (plural!)

Finn has met some grandparents so far, with more family coming throughout the next few months. Within a week and a half old, he gained a pound and has been off to the races since then. He’s shown good head control on tummy time and has officially rolled from tummy to back already! I thought it was a fluke around 4 weeks, but then he kept doing it while on tummy time during the last week. It’s not coordinated by any means, I think he just accidentally whips his head up and over and then kicks his legs out of frustration until he’s on his back. But I’ll count it!

He seemed to find his voice pretty early given his high pitched screams and shrieks and very loud cries. But we’ve learned how to calm him pretty quickly by swaddling. He wakes twice a night to eat, but lately he’s showing signs of not being fully awake so I’m almost having to wake him to eat. So I think we’ll start to see longer stretches out of him soon. He’s a loud sleeper, as newborns tend to be. He grunts and thrashes around which wakes this light-sleeping mama up constantly. So needless to say the nights are long for me. Luckily, I have a husband who doesn’t need much sleep and I can hand the baby off at 5am and grab another hour or two of sleep before he heads to work.

Finn’s eyes are starting to lighten and his hair is almost reddish – we’ll call it strawberry blonde. Harper loves to kiss his forehead and doesn’t hesitate to tell me to put him down when she needs me to help her, bossy lady! 🙂

Kiss from sister

Enjoyed a visit from his Grandpa!

These two are the cutest. So far, Harper isn’t very interested in Finn, but I know that will change as he gets more interactive. She does like to give him kisses and wave “Hi Finnegan!” She does not like when we call him Finny (she says “No, Finny’s at school” but she’s referring to her friend Finley.) Sometimes when I’m holding him as he fusses she’ll say “Put him in the swing, Mommy.” She’s still getting used to me splitting my time between the two of them, but she’s handling it well and his crying doesn’t faze her. When she comes home from school, she knows to immediately wash her hands before coming to find him. I will love watching these two grow closer together.
